What is Flightcrew

TL;DR: Flightcrew is an application that helps engineers shift-left to catch and fix configuration issues. You can use Flightcrew to improve availability, scale workloads, and simplify infrastructure workflows for feature teams.

Why are you so excited about configs?

Well it’s not about configs, it’s about a smarter way to ship and maintain software.

Looking back at our time building and maintaining cloud infrastructure, our biggest headaches came because we couldn’t understand that there was something wrong with the configs until it hit production and killed our uptime or budget, or just generally embarrassed someone.

Config issues are obscured from monitoring, interdependent, poorly documented, and highly technical. "Safety" is a moving target based on the dynamic nature of distributed systems. Code, architecture, traffic, and third-party versions are always changing, and it’s often only a few veteran engineers who have a holistic sense of risks and solutions. This gets even worse as platform engineering tends to push more and more of this responsibility to feature developers through self-serve workflows.

So if you wanted to fix this, you’d need:

  1. A technical and semantic understanding of configs and their dependencies.

  2. A retrospective and experimental understanding of production workloads.

  3. To be living and breathing in developer workflows and infrastructure by staying up-to-date with code and traffic changes.

But if you nailed that you could:

  1. Fix blindspots, bottlenecks, and cascading failures before they hit production

  2. Shortcut tuning and optimization workflows

  3. Trust anyone to size, scale, and update their infrastructure with smarter abstractions

…and a lot of other things! In short, you could start to scale SRE time and expertise in our modern, platform-centric world.

So that’s what we’re building.

We’ve been building this for 2 years with some world-class engineering teams. Our first official release helps engineers improve availability, scale workloads, and reduce cloud costs. We’re hiring and if this sort of thing is interesting to you, we’d love to chat.
